December 2008
For my last new music tip sheet of 2008 I have rounded up some of the leading figures in Rock music to give us their tips of the best unsigned or self released rock acts to look out for in 2009 and boy is there some great music out there.
Chris Ingham (Publisher Classic Rock magazine)
I'd say Electric Mary are a damned fine rock band (from Oz).

A perfect blend of classic Free meets Cream combined with the toughness of AC/DC . Great band, great tunes, great swagger. Definitely destined to be big in 2009. Tracks to check out 'Let Me Out' and 'Sorry'
Daniel P Carter (Radio 1 Rock Show)
My favorite new act out there at the moment has to be Kong .

Hailing from Manchester and featuring members of Oceansize this band offer something different aside from wearing red and sporting clear plastic masks. Their approach to their music is as equally off the wall too . To get the best idea of Kong click on the channel M link below.

James Gill (Metal Hammer Magazine - Editor at Large)
My unsigned tip has to be We Are the Ocean. www.myspace.com/wearetheoceanuk
WATO are a young London hard rock band from the US school of screamo giants, Alexisonfire, and pack as much melody as grit into each perfectly formed song. Being from London the guys have hammered the locale and built a live following that allowed them to sell-out the Islington Academy - which is no mean feat for a very young and healthily heavy band.
Brandon Friesen (Producer Nickelback, Studio Owner, TV Producer etc )
My favorite new hard rocking act are without a doubt the excellent 'Dreadnaut' from Winnipeg Canada. http://www.myspace.com/dreadnaut
Tracks to listen to are 'A Perfect Day' . Relentless pounding kick drums , all guitars ablazing with great riffs and to top it off a brilliant front man . This band deserve to be huge.

Hunting The Minotaur

Described on the bands myspace as Mews mixed with Biffy Clyro. Dueling guitars and great songs make for something a little bit special and this band from sleepy old Worthing have all the ingredients and innovativeness of a soon to be great British rock act. Tracks to check out are 'Bear Mountain' and 'Lone Wolf'
Joe Baressi (Producer Queens of the Stoneage / Tool )
A good friend of mines band from LA immediately come to mind they are called "Culture Killers"and well worth searching out. If you like good honest heavy GnR style Rock then this lot have some great tunes. Songs to listen to are "Let Me Drive" and "Good Hollywood"

I am breaking with convention and tipping the Urban Voodoo Machine
http://www.myspace.com/theurbanvoodoomachine
They are like the Pogues resurrected as Zombies in a soundclash with Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello. They are releasing their own album in March and are on tour with the Pogues
as we speak and well worth catching live. Check out "No Bail Blues"
Hammerfest 09.
Finally since I have just finished booking the headliners for Metal Hammer magazines first ever "Hammerfest" indoor Metal festival taking place in Prestatyn on April 24th and 25th and featuring Welsh legends "Bullet For My Valentine" as well as 'Opeth' , 'Saxon' , 'Cathedral' and the mighty 'Skindred' amongst 50 other acts across the weekend I thought it would be rude not to plug it. Anyone into their metal and heavy rock should check out www.hammerfest.co.uk for what promises to be a great fun filled weekend.
In my next industry tip sheet I will be mixing it up further by asking the music industries leading music lawyers with their ears firmly on the pulse as to their tips of acts to look out for in 2009. Lastly all that is left for me to say is that this year has been one of my most enjoyable in the industry to date so heres to more great music and more success stories for you and our industry in 2009 . Its been a Joy.
